Okay, now I KNOW this one...it was just on a show on E!. Carol Burnette tugs her ear as a way of giving a silent message to her grandmother, who fostered her. Her parents were alcoholics.
She tugs her ear as a way of saying hi to her mom....
I think she is saying hi but to who, I'm not sure.

I thought it was saying Hi to her children.
I knew it was a signal to a family member, but I wasn't sure who. I agree w/ML though. It was to her grandmother.
